CREO’s Update on the Climate Finance Gap Featured in New Private Markets

We’re excited to share that CREO’s latest paper, Understanding the Climate Finance Gap: 2025 Update, has been featured in an article by New Private Markets.

This research which comes from our Advisory arm, is an update on the report we published in 2024 which also covers the “missing middle” in climate finance.

Our report found that climate fund performance from the period of 2010-24 has lagged the wider market, delivering net internal rates of return circa 2 percent lower. This was the case for venture capital and growth equity, the report found, but the reverse was true for private equity.

The paper identifies six imperatives for climate investors, including expanding private debt, unlocking growth equity for scale-ready technologies, and backing emerging managers poised to drive innovation. Despite a 50% decline in fundraising last year, investment activity rose 27%, signaling resilient demand and growing opportunities for private capital.

As public funding weakens, the private sector’s role has never been more critical. The next phase of climate investing must go beyond raising more capital to channeling it into the structures and sectors that can scale proven technologies and close persistent gaps.

This research report  examines how global climate markets are evolving and what investors must do to close the gap.
